FO Licht revises down 2008/09 sugar production to 154 million tonnes

World 2009/10 sugar production is revised down to 153.9 million metric tonnes raw value, as output from the Americas and Asian countries is below expectations, according to Dow Jones.

This is down 2.9 million tonnes from the firm's October estimate, but remains higher than world 2008/09 production of 149.9 million tonnes.

"Sugar crops in almost all of the world's key producers--with the EU being the sole exception --have not lived up to initial expectations," said the firm.

Brazil's 2009/10 sugar production was revised down 0.5 million tonnes to 36.5 million tonnes as unseasonably wet weather hampered the harvest.

However, "the plentiful rainfall that has hindered the 2009/10 harvest should help the development of the 2010/11 cane crop, while a record 50 million tonnes of cane are estimated to remain uncut in the fields from the 2009/10 harvest," said the firm.
