MEXICO: 2009/10 sugar production seen at 4.97 million tonnes

Mexico's current 2009/10 sugar harvest is now forecast to produce 4.972 million metric tonnes of semi-refined standard sugar, according to Dow Jones.

This is largely flat on production of 4,962,818 tonnes in the last 2008/09 harvest, said the National Sugar And Alcohol Chamber, which at the beginning of the harvest had pegged production to reach about 5.2 million tonnes.

The chamber said it was "impossible" for production at this point in the harvest cycle to recover from the slow start and disappointing yields, owing mostly to extensive periods of unseasonable rains.
