Thailand's sugar production in this crop year until March 9 fell 1.2% from a year ago as lower yields offset a slight rebound in cane output, according to Dow Jones.
Asia's top sugar exporter produced 6.07 million metric tonnes in the crop year which began Oct. 1, down from 6.14 million tonnes in the year-earlier period. Of the total, 3.63 million tonnes were raw sugar and 2.37 million tonnes white sugar, according to the Office of Cane and Sugar Board, which operates under the Ministry of Industry.
The country crushed 61.17 million tonnes of cane, up from 57.38 million tonnes a year ago. This translated into an average sugar yield of 99.16 kilograms per ton of cane this season, down 7.4% from 107.03 kg for the 2008/09 crop.
