UKRAINE: Sugar exports soar in 2011/12

Ukraine's sugar exports in the 2011/12 marketing year (September to August), are likely to total 150,000 metric tonnes, up from 6,200 tonnes exported in the previous marketing year, according to Dow Jones.

Ukraine exported 118,300 tonnes of sugar in September to June, Ukrtsukor said. June's exports totaled 23,500 tonnes. The main importers of Ukraine's sugar in September to June were Kazakhstan which took 83,000 tonnes, Georgia received 8,900 tonnes, Kyrgyzstan 5,900 tonnes, Lebanon 4,450 tonnes, Uzbekistan 3,987 tonnes, Turkmenistan 3,400 tonnes and Syria 2,400 tonnes.

Ukrtsukor also said Ukraine's sugar imports in September to June fell to 14,560 tonnes from nearly 290,000 tonnes in the corresponding period in the previous marketing year.

In 2011 Ukraine produced 2.33 million tonnes of sugar from domestically harvested beet after a good crop compared with 1.54 million tonnes in 2010. Ukraine's annual domestic sugar requirement is 1.8-1.9 million tonnes.
