Works and Hydraulics Minister Robeson Benn says a sugar-laden ship, MV Johanna Key Thursday night slammed into the Berbice River Bridge, forcing a temporary halt to traffic, according to Guyana's National Communications Networks.
Benn told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that the incident occured sometime after 9:00PM as the 700-tonne vessel was traveling from the Blairmont Estate.
He said the traffic which was halted briefly has since resumed, according to GINA. Tugs from the German-owned bauxite company, Oldendorff, were being deployed to remove the ship.
Reports say the ship was resting on one of the south-end pontoons that keeps the Berbice Bridge afloat.
It has since been removed, according to authorities.
