BANGLADESH: Cane farmers to get subsidy

Sugarcane growers of Rangpur Sugar Mills Limited (RSML) located at Mohimaganj area under Gobindaganj Upazila in the district got BDT5.422 million (US$660,132) as agri subsidy from the government during the last fiscal year, according to Bangladesh's Financial Express newspaper.
The officials of the RSML formally distributed the subsidy recently to the growers in mill zone areas in a bid to give them financial support to cultivate sugarcane without economical troubles to get desired production, source said.
Each of the growers got agri subsidy ranging from BDT3,300 to BDT4,400 for cultivating the crop on an acre of land during the 2011/12 sugarcane season, said general manager (Agri) Alik Shom.
Talking to the BSS, managing director of RSML Abdul Khaleque said as many as 5,462 acres of land were brought under sugarcane cultivation in 2011/12 season and of them subsidy was distributed against 1701 acres of land owned by 2043 growers.
