Leaders in Busia county have accused Mumias Sugar Company officials of frustrating cane farmers, according to Kenya's The Star newspaper.

Led by Walatsi ward civic leader councillor Jack Wambulwa, the leaders said it is unfair for the company to harass farmers especially those whose contracts have expired.

"Any cane farmer whose contract with Mumias Sugar Company has expired is at liberty to sell cane to a sugar company of his choice," said Wambulwa.

The Cess chairman said Mumias should sue West Kenya Sugar Company if it has evidence that the latter is poaching cane from its contracted farmers.

"This is better than hiring goons to block trucks from transporting cane to West Kenya Sugar Company," said the civic leader.
