Mexico's new 2009/10 sugar harvest produced 2,684,303 metric tonnes of semi-refined standard sugar through March 13, down 13% on the year, according to Dow Jones.

Releasing its 18th weekly harvest update for the new crop cycle (November-October) the National Sugar and Alcohol Chamber said this compares to output of 3,097,663 tonnes at this time of the harvest in the last 2008/09 crop year.

Production in harvest week 18 from March 7-13, meanwhile, reached 251,115 tonnes, down from output of 253,259 tonnes produced last week, the report said, showing signs of the harvest starting to slow down from the peak in February.

Continuing disappointing yields, based on milled sugar per ton of raw cane, were drawing overall production down, with average yields at 10.62% by March 13 compared to yields of 11.43% by week 18 last year, the union said.
