Ethiopia will import 80,000 metric tonnes of sugar in the 12 months through July 7 to alleviate shortages, according to Bloomberg.

Efforts by the state-owned Ethiopian Sugar Development Agency to limit retail prices to ETB13.50 (US$1.01) per kilogram have failed as prices have risen to ETB18 , according to the Addis Ababa-based Fortune newspaper, which cited Habtamu Reggassa, an agency official.

The agency expects international sugar prices to drop in April following increases in supply from Brazil, Fortune reported.
