Mexico's new 2009/10 sugar harvest produced 2,433,190 metric tonnes of semi-refined standard sugar through March 6, down 14% on the year, according to Dow Jones.

Releasing its 17th weekly harvest update for the new crop cycle (November-October), the National Cane Sugar Growers Union said this compares to output of 2,822,500 tonnes at this time of the harvest in the last 2008/09 crop year.

Production in harvest week 17 from Feb. 28-March 6, meanwhile, fell 2.5%, to 253,267 tonnes, from output of 259,762 tonnes in the same week last year, the report said.

Continuing disappointing yields, based on milled sugar per ton of raw cane, were drawing overall production down, with average yields at 10.54% by March 6, compared to yields of 11.37% by week 17 last year, the union said.
