Today the United States and Brazil dominate global production of fuel ethanol. The Renewable Fuels Standard sets out a clear pathway for increased use of biofuels in the United States. In Brazil, strong fuel ethanol consumption is supported by a large and growing fleet of flexi-fuel vehicles and the potential for significantly greater use presents a challenge for the sugar/ethanol sector in terms of the scale of investment needed. The European Union is the next largest biofuels market, underpinned by the bloc's biofuels policy.

In this study key policy and economic drivers in major fuel ethanol markets are identified and analysed in order to prepare an indicative world fuel ethanol outlook to 2020.
