Guatemalan sugar exports from the start of the current 2009/10 crop year Nov. 1 to March 8 were up 65% at 540,601 metric tonnes mixed value, according to Dow Jones.
This compares with exports of 327,823 tonnes in the same period in the 2008/09 crop cycle, ASAZGUA said in the report, a copy of which was obtained by Dow Jones Newswires.
The report also said 194,301 tonnes, or 36% of total Guatemalan sugar exports to date, were shipped to Mexico, where local buyers are scrambling for supply amid a shortfall following a disappointing Mexican cane harvest.
ASAZGUA has forecast total sugar exports from the 2009/10 harvest to rise 2.4% to 1.4 million tonnes from Guatemalan raw and refined sugar shipments of 1.367 million tonnes.
