Favourable global sugar prices and currency movements, along with the continued ban on Thai sugar syrup and premix powder, may help explain the surge in Chinese raw sugar imports.

Robust Chinese buying of raw sugar continues. After an unexpected 2.5 million tonnes of raw sugar imports in the month of May (compared to a modest 102,000 tonnes in May 2024), China imported 420,000 tonnes of the sweetener in June and another 740,000 tonnes in July this year.
