Indonesia’s attempt to ramp up domestic production and curtail imports creates complications for the top regional sugar exporter, Thailand.

Indonesia, with roughly 287 million people, has been one of Asia's top sugar consumers and importers. However, its heavy reliance on imports exposes it to global supply constraints, price volatility, and export restrictions. Thus, to reduce dependence on imports, the Indonesian government has taken measures such as expanding cane cultivation area and reviving inactive mills
