China is forecast to produce and import more sugar in the upcoming 2025/26 season, but its continued ban on imports of Thai sugar syrup and premixed powder creates multiple headwinds for Thailand’s sugar industry.

Supported by increased cane cultivation in Guangxi, the likelihood of improved sugar content in Inner Mongolia and another good beet crop in Xinjiang, China is expected to produce 11.5 million tonnes of sugar in the 2025/26 season—500,000 tonnes more than the estimated output in the current season, according to the latest USDA’s report.
