Import-dependent East Asian countries, particularly major consumers like Indonesia and China, are taking action to reduce their reliance on foreign sugar supplies through the tightening of import controls, ramping up of domestic production, and the introduction of disincentive schemes to reduce consumption.

As sugar consumption continues to outpace domestic production, imports remain essential. However, this reliance exposes Indonesia to global supply constraints and price volatility. To reduce dependence on imports, the Indonesian government is taking multiple steps to ramp up sugar production. For example, it is upgrading old factories and restarting several inactive mills to expand processing
