Sugaronline India Report – India’s sugar industry’s prospects may turn bleak in the upcoming season

Despite the looming threat of El Nino, cultivation of the cane crop is expected to progress smoothly this year. However, monsoon rains are not the only variable the country’s sugar industry should watch for.

As of May 15, the country’s mills have processed 32.1 million tonnes of sugar, according to the Indian sugar Mills Association (ISMA). As many as 500 mills have closed their crushing operations while 37 mills, including 16 in Tamil Nadu and 15 in Uttar Pradesh are still operating. ISMA says that the total sugar output
