India’s sugar industry is facing a demand-driven reality check, with stagnant domestic sales and weak export economics.

After accounting for ethanol diversion of 3.2 million tonnes, India’s sugar output is now expected to come in lower at 28.3 million tonnes—about 4.4% below earlier estimates of 29.6 million tonnes.
