India’s decision to expand its sugar export quota is unlikely to materially boost outbound shipments, as Indian sugar remains uncompetitive in global markets due to higher production costs and firm domestic prices.

In a surprise move, the Indian government has permitted the export of an additional 500,000 tonnes of sugar, over and above the 1.5 million tonnes already approved for the current crushing season. Nevertheless, that will be of little help in boosting exports. In reality, the regulatory move seems more symbolic than substantive. India's Sugar Exports
