Cane politics to dominate parliamentary polls in UP

It doesn’t matter who wins the election on April 11 because no party is willing to risk a shift to populist cane pricing policies.

India, the world’s largest democracy, is in election mode and so is its largest state, Uttar Pradesh, that also happens to be the country’s largest sugar producer. More than 57 million people including 3.7 million cane growers are dependent upon the state’s sugar industry that’s been suffering from populist cane pricing and subdued (sugar) prices
